Non-Amish with Interest in Amish & Ex-Amish Culture http://www.examish.com/discussion/60/non-amish-with-interest-in-amish-ex-amish-culture Wed, 02 May 2012 12:52:14 -0400 igotplans2 60@/discussions For many years I've have a great fascination for Amish culture, and I've probably seen every documentary and TV show ever done on the communities. After watching a few episode of the "Out Of Order" series, I have a question: Why does it seem that many of the ex-Amish young men use so much profanity. It seems like every other sentence has one curse word or another. Is it just one form of rebellion or a way of trying to strip the old ways from their minds? I'm just really perplexed by what what seems to be an "all or nothing" way of living; for instance, why do most of the teens seems to get so totally out of control with partying and the worst aspects of English culture during Rumspringa? In truth, that's just not the way most Americans live on a regular basis. And what's up with the Amish tradition of young couples sharing the girl's bed before marriage? Traditional American (English) families would never allow such a temptation. Is it supposed to help one test or increase their willpower? I guess I'm asking why I never see depicted on TV ex-Amish adopting more the lifestyle of typical religious families in America, who dress modestly, don't drink or drug, don't have sex outside or marriage, or use foul language, attend church regularly, etc. Maybe ex-Amish living that way just don't make for good TV(?)

Many thanks!

CASTING MTV'S TRUE LIFE: ARE YOU ADDICTED TO MARIJUANA?
Are you smoking so much marijuana that it's messing up your life? Have you gone way beyond the "typical" pot smoker to the point where you need weed just to feel normal? Is it no longer pleasurable but you keep doing it anyway? Do you continue to smoke despite negative consequences in your life? Is your girlfriend, boyfriend, or family fed up with your use? Do you want to quit but you're finding it hard to stop? Have you looked into treatment programs or support groups for marijuana addiction? Are you smoking large amounts of Spice or K2, a form of synthetic marijuana?

If you appear to be between the ages of 15-28 and have answered 'yes' to any of these questions, MTV wants to hear your story.  Please send your name, age, phone number, location, a photo, and a brief explanation of your situation to:

mtvshowcasting@mtvstaff.com

About True Life:
"True Life" has been on MTV for over ten years, and it covers important social and personal issues for young people in a straightforward, empathic style that respects its participants and its impressionable viewers.  Our style allows the young people to tell their own stories, in their own voices, without a reporter or narrator.  We simply follow them through their lives, without affecting their choices in any way, and we capture real life as it happens.

Our goal, as with all episodes of True Life, is to put young people across the country in our subjects’ shoes.  We hope that, by portraying the most intimate moments of our subjects’ lives, we will help young people understand complex personal and social issues.

'In Plain Sight' recap: "Something A-Mish"

“Something A-Mish” – aired Sunday, June 12, 2011 at 10 p.m. EST on USA

In the quiet countryside of Intercourse, Pennsylvania, members of an Amish family - an elder farmhand and Sarah Petershwim, are conversing while working in the field. The serene afternoon is broken by the arrival of the biker gang, Hells Vanguard. Sarah, in the bushes, lies low, watching. The bikers approach the farmhand, questioning him, but he is oblivious. Sarah strains to hear the conversation. One biker pulls out a gun. The farmhand futilely tries to run as rounds are fired, piercing his back.

Horse injured in motor vehicle accident in Dolgeville
Area emergency personnel responded to the scene of an accident involving an Amish wagon Monday afternoon in the village of Dolgeville.
According to Dolgeville Volunteer Fire Department Information Officer Roger Cromer, firefighters on scene of the 4:15 accident found a pickup truck that was southbound on South Main Street near the intersection of Spofford Avenue. The driver of the pickup truck reportedly failed to see an Amish horse and wagon with two adults on board that was also traveling south on South Main Street.
Cromer said the pickup truck struck the Amish wagon from behind, causing heavy damage to the wagon and injuring the horse. He said the adult male on the wagon was not injured, but the adult woman who was with him was transported by Stratford and Salisbury Ambulance to a local hospital for evaluation. The driver of the truck, said Cromer, was not injured.

While the debate moderator, John King, seemed very concerned about applause and answers taking up too much time, he seemed quite alright with useless question such as wanting to know a candidate's preferred soft drink or musical artist.div class="mce_image_container" style="margin-top: 10px; margin-right: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 10px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; float: right; width: 272px; background-image: url(From left, former Pennsylvania Sen. Tim Pawlenty and businessman Herman Cain stand on stage before first New Hampshire Republican presidential debate at St. Anselm College in Manchester, N.H., Monday, June 13, 2011. (Image: Associated Press)The most entertaining answer was probably when Newt Gingrich was asked if he preferred Dancing with the Stars or American Idol. Without hesitation, the former Speaker of the House answered American Idol, which will no doubt allow political commentators some playful jokes over the next few days, but these questions and answers offered little substance to the debate. The winner of the night – who was also the winner of the first Republican debate – was Ron Paul. At least a few times, some of the candidates referenced Dr. Paul in their answers, and sounded their best when they used similar rhetoric as the Congressman from Texas. He was not as exciting as he was last month in South Carolina talking about Heroin, but he was able to refrain from giving himself a bad image – something none of the other candidates were able to do.Michelle Bachman got the ball rolling by dodging the first question that was asked of her. When she was asked about Wall Street and whether or not they needed oversight, she instead announced that she was officially running for President of the United States and failed to give any answer to what her position was on the issue. This seemed to be an obvious attempt to shift the focus away from the question and to bring attention to herself, but no one seemed to care all that much.div class="mce_image_container" style="margin-top: 10px; margin-right: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 10px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; float: left; width: 272px; background-image: url(Rep. Romney once again voiced his support for the repeal of Obamacare and backed off from the assertion that the supported national healthcare even though the bill was taken from the plan that he implemented in Massachusetts. Unfortunately, none of the other candidates wished to challenge the former governor on this issue.Herman Cain – former CEO of Godfather's Pizza – provided more flip-flopping when he backtracked on his support for TARP.“When the concept of TARP was first presented to the public, I was willing to go along with it. But then when the administration started to implement it on a discretionary basis, picking winners and losers and also directing funds to General Motors and others that had nothing to do with the financial system, that's where I totally disagreed.”The problem with this statement is that Cain still acknowledges that he thinks it was acceptable to pump money into banks that were failing in order to prevent a financial collapse. This is a clear contradiction, because in the same statement, he professed a strong disagreement with “picking winners and losers”.div class="mce_image_container" style="margin-top: 10px; margin-right: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 10px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; float: right; width: 272px; background-image: url(Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, left, and businessman Herman Cain share a laugh during a break in the first New Hampshire Republican presidential debate. (Image: Associated Press)Newt Gingrich and Tim Pawlenty both got their share of cheers, but also had some negative moments when their positions were compared to the current President's policies. When Gingrich was asked about healthcare mandates – a position he had flirted with – the former history professor quickly voiced his opposition to mandated government healthcare.Tim Pawlenty, meanwhile, was asked whether he agreed with Congressman Paul about ceasing the bombings on Yemen, or if he sided with the President and his policy of continuing the bombings. Although not referencing Dr. Paul or President Obama, Pawlenty answered by mentioning the September 11th attacks and that if there were targets in Yemen then we should continue the attacks.Although Rick Santorum espoused support for Medicare Plan D – one of the largest expansions of government under the Bush administration – this was not his greatest folly. The former Senator from Pennsylvania simply failed to make any kind of noticeable impact at all. He was truly the forgotten man of this debate, and will surely pay for it in the polls.Congressman Ron Paul may not have been flashy, but his answers had substance, he never contradicted himself, nor did he say anything that might have scared away an entire demographic of voters. This couldn't be said about Herman Cain who acknowledged that he would be uncomfortable appointing a Muslim to his cabinet for fear that they might be the kind of Muslims that want to kill us.Not only did the congressman perform well at the debate, but his ideas have begun to gain more traction among an electorate who are fed up with what they're getting from both parties. He received one of the louder ovations of the night for his comment on two of the wars we're fighting in the Middle East.div class="mce_image_container" style="margin-top: 10px; margin-right: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 10px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; float: left; width: 272px; background-image: url(Former Pennsylvania Sen.  “We should spend more time defending our own borders instead of the border between Iraq and Afghanistan.”While Ron Paul might not be seen as the front-runner, this could change very fast. Mitt Romney – the perceived front-runner – hasn't had the nicest things said about him recently. GOP strategist, Greg Mueller proclaimed of Romney, “I can't think of a weaker front-runner.”Ron Paul is the only candidate who is consistently right on the issues. He has long time record of voting to defend the Constitution, and was the only candidate on stage who had any substance in what he was saying. For these reasons – and many more – he receives my full endorsement and support for President in 2012.More from The Political Pro-Con

Well on a recent road trip to Cleveland to visit Aaron's family for the weekend, we took a pit stop in Shipshewana, the heart of northern Indiana Amish country. When we saw big globs of horse poop along the side of the road, we knew we weren't in the city anymore. We were on the hunt for a new kitchen table and we'd heard all the stories about the craftsmanship and value of Amish furniture.  We hadn't planned the stop over, but merely noticed the road signs and decided to take advantage of our global positioning. So we took the exit off the highway towards Shipshewana. Then we drove, and drove and drove for another 30 minutes, because, man, rural Indiana is really, well, rural. But it was fun to point out the farms and various farm animals to Mia. She's just starting to learn all about cows, sheep, pigs and horses and this was an amazing teaching opportunity.  And she got a lesson about horses in a big way.Once we decided upon the many Amish furniture stores to choose from, we got out of the car to stretch our legs and eat our lunch. It was fairly warm out, so we picnicked on a bench in front of the store next to a horse farm. We told Mia all about the horses.
